Traditionally, Matthew is put first because of its strong thematic connection to the Old Testament. Mark comes in-between Matthew and Luke because its content is similar to both. Luke was written for a gentile audience, and traditionally comes third. Finally, John’s gospel has the most unique content, which is why it normally comes last. (If anyone chose to arrange them in the order they were written, that would be: Mark, Luke, Matthew, John.) For an explanation of how the four gospels were “blended” into one story with 48 Episodes, see Appendix 3: About this Book.

*NOTE: In the ancient world, it was common to take the collected writings of a single author (say, Aristotle) and arrange them by their size. This custom was used from the earliest attempts to formalize the Traditional Cannon from 200 to 400 AD. Even the Old Testament Cannon, finalized around 200 BC, uses the “size method” for the books of the Prophets.
